The Hibbing restaurant is where the tradition and great taste of Sammy’s Pizza began. It’s where Sam Perrella, in 1954, served up the pizza, spaghetti, ravioli and other favorite family recipes that started the legacy his family proudly continues to this day.
The restaurant has moved locations over the years, and it’s expanded. The menu’s grown, too. But the tradition of brick-oven baked pizza combined with a friendly and relaxed dining experience remains as strong as ever.
Multiple generations of families have enjoyed Sammy’s Pizza. For some, the tradition includes not just eating at, but working for the restaurant. That was the case with Josh, Jake, Justin and Jesse. The four brothers have each taken a turn at Sammy’s during their high school years, some as delivery drivers, others as cooks. Jesse, who currently works at Sammy’s, is the last of the brothers. However, Josh, the oldest, just got married, so in a few years there could be another generation to carry on the tradition.
Present-day owners Rich and Rachael Chalupsky, have a magical Sammy’s story of their own. They first met while working together at Sammy’s Pizza in Grand Rapids. They stayed in the pizza business and, in 2002, jumped at the chance to partner with Tony and Mike to buy the Hibbing restaurant from Jeff Perrella, Sr., who was ready to retire.
Today, they continue the traditions of great Sammy’s Pizza and strong community spirit and support. They gladly deliver anything on their menu (and sometimes things that aren’t) to keep their diners happy. They’re even more happy to welcome customers – both longtime and new—into their restaurant, which often serves as the site of parties, team gatherings and even grooms’ dinners.
