The original Sammy’s Pizza Palace opened in Eau Claire in 1957, a few blocks down Barstow Street from its current location. Sam Perrella, himself, owned the restaurant, though several different people managed it for him during the early years.
In 1971, Sam sold the restaurant to brothers Jim and Mike Jerulle, sons of his best friend, Nick Jerulle. This was the first time Sam allowed someone outside his own family to own a Sammy’s Pizza – an indication of the respect he held for his best friend.
Jim and Mike worked in partnership for seven years until Mike purchased his own Sammy’s Pizza in Duluth, MN. Today, Jim is joined by his son, Jim Jr., operating the restaurant that’s been a big piece of their family and extended family (their customers) for multiple generations.
Among the most famous customers to visit Sammy’s Pizza Palace were Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. The music legends dined there in 1959, just days before they died in a plane crash. During their meal, which followed a concert at Fournier’s Ballroom, (located just across the street from the original Sammy’s location) they took the time to sign autographs – on Sammy’s napkins – for several customers.
