Sammy’s Pizza now offers whole wheat crust option

White? Or Wheat? At Sammy’s Pizza, you now have a choice in hand-crimped crusts.

Fear not if you love our traditional crust, it’s here to stay. We know better than to mess with a good thing.

But we also recognize that a growing number of people are looking for more nutritional offerings, or have special dietary needs. And we want to serve them, too. That’s why we’ve developed a new wheat crust made with whole-wheat flour.

It took months of planning, experimenting and fine-tuning. The Sammy’s Pizzas in Lakeside and Coon Rapids worked independently to develop a new recipe, using their restaurants as test kitchens and their employees as test groups. Once each restaurant had a recipe they liked, they compared notes and found their recipes were fairly similar. After a few adjustments to combine the two, they presented the new wheat crust recipe to the other Sammy’s restaurants for input. A unanimous verdict came back that the recipe is great, and it’s been in our restaurants since November 1.

Special thanks to Stan Bloomberg, a long time Sammy’s cook who currently works at Sammy’s in Cloquet, and Lee Nordeen from Upper Lakes Foods. Both were instrumental in helping develop the new wheat crust.

We hope you’ll try it on your next visit!

Many of you have turned the experience of enjoying Sammy’s Pizza into traditions of your own, and are now sharing those stories with us. Here’s the latest example.

Dari, Saginaw, MN

I have relatives who moved from Duluth to Austin, Texas. What they miss the most is "Sammy's Pizza." So when I go to Austin to see them I pack a suitcase full of Sammy's Pizzas for them. They love to have me visit. Not sure if it's me or the Sammy's Pizza I bring, haha! Thanks much! Keep up the good work!
